5 Cleaning Tips for the Home

Cleaning can be a tedious job, but it’s one that we all must do to stay healthy and live in a nice environment. However, there are some handy time-saving hacks out there to help you along the way, so that you’re not spending all of your life scrubbing surfaces and sweeping floors.

We rustled up our top five tricks for keeping a clean and tidy home.

Unclog your drains

Have you noticed that your water isn’t draining as fast as it used to? Stay away from harsh chemicals that can damage the plastic piping and lead to leaks by opting for a concoction of baking soda and vinegar instead. These two powerful natural substances can do wonders around the house when combined.

For drains, simply add ½ cup of baking soda to ½ a cup of vinegar and pour the mixture down the plughole. Let it sit for approximately five minutes, covering the drain with a damp cloth. Afterwards, flush it all away with some boiling water. This should also help to remove any nasty smells coming from the sink.

Wipe away soap residue

If you have a glass shower door or fancy tiles in your bathroom, you’ve probably noticed that they can get covered in a misty soap residue over time. This can be hard to get rid of, especially if you use more soap and water in an attempt to clean it.

Instead, grab a lightly dampened dryer sheet and polish the scummy area. It’ll come out a treat without the need for stinking the house out with bleach.

Pick up that hair

Animals can be a nightmare when you’re trying to keep your home tidy. Many owners even stop their pets from hopping on the sofas because of their constant shedding.

You can enjoy the company of your dog or cat and maintain a hair-free home by rubbing a damp rubber glove along the afflicted textile surfaces. The bumpy texture of the glove will pick up all the fur, leaving your couch looking spotless.

Muck-free microwave

Cleaning your microwave can be a pain, especially if there is a buildup of baked-on bean juice. It doesn’t have to be such a chore, however, as there’s a very easy way to get the job done.

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with equal amounts of water and vinegar. You could also add lemon juice for a fresh, zesty scent. Pop a toothpick in the solution to prevent it boiling and turn the appliance on for 5-10 minutes. Remove the bowl and after everything has cooled down, simply wipe away the nasty remnants of last night’s snack.

Hard water spots

There’s no doubt that the water in Hull is hard and this can create a film of minerals around your taps. Magically get rid of these stains with our good old friend Mr Vinegar.

Wipe around the area with a damp cloth soaked in the everyday grocery item. Meanwhile, removable taps and shower heads can be left in a bowl of the stuff to soak, just make sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards.

If you’re cleaning a large area, such as a shower door, make up a 50/50 blend of water and vinegar and pour it into a handheld spray bottle.
