Brilliant Events in June in Hull

Summer is just around the corner and the culture is hotting up in Hull. As a result, June will come alive with festivals, music, literature and international film. We’ve rounded up our top five upcoming events across the city next month.

Back to Ours

After having huge success earlier this year, the Back to Ours festival (pictured) is returning to all parts of Hull. Whether you’re from the east, west or the north of the city, you can enjoy this fabulous festival that’s jam-packed full of exciting events for the whole family.

The events will take place in community spaces, centres and local schools and include film screenings, magical performances, hilarious comedy and intriguing talks. It’s all about bringing the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 to your doorstep.

When: Tuesday 30 May until Sunday 4 June

The Big Malarkey Festival

If you’ve got little ones who love literature, The Big Malarkey Festival will be right up your street.

Hosted in East Park, the weeklong free event involves testing out your illustration skills, coming up with your own stories and creating some awesome animation. You can even meet writers, poets and puppeteers!

The literature celebration is suited to children aged 0-16, but you can bring your family and friends along too. There’s also a special programme for the under 5s as well, with an all-dancing finale weekend.

When: Monday 26 June until Sunday 2 July

BP Big Screens

Not only is Zebedee’s Yard one of the city’s newest entertainment spaces, BP Big Screens is one of this summer’s hottest events.

You can watch the best of The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera during three outdoor screenings in the Yard throughout June and July. What’s more is that you can also see what goes on behind the stage with exclusive films and competitions. Bring a picnic and some friends and make the most of some free culture in the sun.

When: Wednesday 7 June, Tuesday 4 July and Friday 14 July. Times TBC.

Beverley Folk Festival

Beverley is just a short train ride away from Hull City Centre and definitely worth a visit if you live in the area. And what better excuse than this fantastic folk festival held at the Racecourse?

The weekend includes a lineup of incredible folk artists, such as Eddi Reader, Martin and Eliza Carthy and Jon Boden. In the process, you can also enjoy literature, comedy, workshops and children’s activities.

When: 16-18 June

Hull Film Festival

Hull Independent Cinema works hard all year round to bring different, independent film to the city. In June, they return with their annual Hull Film Festival, which will celebrate award-winning, critically acclaimed movies.

Prepare for cult classics, fascinating documentaries, exclusive filmography and world cinema.

When: Monday 26 June until Sunday 9 July. Specific times and venues TBC.
